Research Summary
Through literature, learners have the opportunity to emotionally participate in the process of learning a new language. “Engaging imaginatively with literature enables learners to shift the focus of their attention beyond the more mechanical aspects of the foreign language system" (Collie and Slater, 1997). Learners become so engaged in the plot that they pay little attention to or even forget about the difficulties they might have regarding vocabulary or any other aspects of the target language. The desire to understand helps the learners to overcome language obstacles. In my research I am testing to see if Collier and Slater’s statement is true and how exactly students engage with different types of literature.
